U.S. ISSUES NEW TRAVEL ALERT FOR MEXICO.
The State Department has updated its advisory for Americans traveling and living in Mexico because of increased violence near the U.S. border and throughout the country. While millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico every year, including thousands who cross the boarder every day for study, tourism or business, violence in the country has increased recently, the advisory said. "It is imperative that travelers understand the risks of travel to Mexico, how best to avoid dangerous situations, and whom to contact if one becomes a crime victim," the advisory said. The greatest increase in violence has occurred near the U.S. border. However, U.S. citizens traveling throughout Mexico should exercise caution in unfamiliar areas and be aware of their surroundings at all times. (Special to TA)

WHTI went into effect June 1, 2009 for land and sea travel into the U.S. WHTI went into effect for air travelers on January 23, 2007.
